Hamas: Moderating or Consolidating?

Hamas: Moderating or Consolidating?

Hamas is dealing with strife in the Gaza Strip, fighting against an Al-Qaeda linked group called Soldiers of the Supporters of God.  This group called for the establishment of an Islamic Emirate in Palestine and for the territory to be governed solely by Sharia Law, says a report on Al Jazeera English.
While there is mixed reviews from Palestinians over the appropriateness of Hamas’ crackdown, it could be an important message set to the United States.  During the crackdown, the leader of the movement, his son and an aide were killed, along with at least 13 other fighters for the splinter group.  Hamas lost 6 of their security forces and six civilians were also killed, including an 11-year old girl.

I’ve witnessed a disturbing trend in politics over the years, and I’m sure it’s been around for longer that any of us have been alive, but I feel like the 24 hour news channels have exacerbated the problem.  I’m talking about the teams-sports mentality of politics and how it’s destroying not only the discussion of issues we face, but also the power that people have to influence our government.  The further we move along this road of us vs. them in the political arena, the more power we give up to a select few and the more me marginalize ourselves, our opinions and the rights accorded to us by the Constitution.

I’m not a very good blogger, am I?

I’m not a very good blogger, am I?

It’s been pretty busy around these parts…  I’m sitting here on a Friday night, just finished watching a movie with my wife and thought I’d run Death Cab’s Grapevine Fires through Genius and do some blogging.

I don’t have the heart to see when the last time I posted was, but really I just need to focus on moving forward.  This is a journey, right?  Can’t spend the whole time looking in the rearview mirror.

This is my apology to those of you who took some time to read and maybe even checked back from time to time to see what was going on, only to see that same post, yellowing at the top of the blog.

I can’t promise I’ll be daily blogging, at least not until after September 17th, but I’m going to try to do a better job.

Alright, so a few days ago a friend forwards me a report written by a 15-year old kid about how teenagers use media. I read it and am just floored that the content of the report was deemed worthy enough to be PUT INTO A REPORT!? I mean, come on, folks, what are we doing here? Are the leaders of Morgan Stanley Research so far out of touch with basically everyone else that they are shocked by what this report “reveals”?

I’ll quote one section in particular, titled Directories:

Teenagers never use real directories (hard copy catalogues such as yellow pages). This is because real directories contain listings for builders and florists, which are services that teenagers do not require. They also do not use services such as 118 118 because it is quite expensive and they can get the information for free on the internet, simply by typing it into Google.

So, teenagers are exactly like every other person that has the barest ability to type Google.com, press enter and then tell the little box what it is you want to find.
